2024 MISSIONS TRIP INFO
We're thrilled that you're interested in joining us on our mission trip to serve at Hope Orphan Home in Sierra Leone! The words below are to serve as an introduction and information hub for the trip. We will provide you with details about the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the trip so that you can make an informed decision about joining us on this journey.
WHO IS HOH?
Hope Orphan Home is an interim care center in Sierra Leone that cares for orphaned children. Currently, we have 20 children in our facility and 7 dedicated caregivers who provide them with unconditional love, guidance based on Gospel truths, and tools to thrive in the present and in the future. We also serve a large number of needy children and widows in our local community.
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING ON A TRIP?
The activities and projects during our missions trip will be tailored to the unique gifts and skills of the individuals who join us. There are numerous possibilities, including organizing a VBS program, participating in construction projects, hosting a ladies' conference, and much more. Additionally, our team will play a crucial role in gathering essential materials for our upcoming event, This is Our Culture. Amidst the meaningful work, we'll also set aside a day to appreciate the natural beauty of Sierra Leone by spending time at the beach."
WHEN WILL WE BE LEAVING?
In order to avoid the heavy rains of the Sierra Leone's rainy season, we aim to depart toward the end of May (approximately the 20th through 31st). As summer in the United States aligns with the peak of Sierra Leone's rainy season, with average rainfall exceeding three feet in July! Please note that these dates (May 20-31) are flexible until tickets are purchased.
WHERE WILL WE BE WORKING/STAYING?
We will be visiting the Western Rural Region of Sierra Leone, where the orphanage is located. We will also spend a day or two in the capital city, Freetown. The specific villages we will be visiting are Mama Beach, Brigitte, Bonga Wharf, Tokeh, and Bureh Town. Our organization will provide transportation for the team to and from these locations. Regarding accommodations, in years past we have secured a place that includes a king-size bed, breakfast, beautiful ocean views, air conditioning at night, and hot running water. If individuals want to lower expenses, team members can share a room.
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST?
The total cost per person for the trip is $3,500, covering airfare ($1,950), lodging ($90 per night, or $45 if sharing), meals ($50 per day), vehicle transportation ($10 per day), boating transportation ($90) and various activities. We understand the cost is significant, but we're committed to helping with fundraising and seeking donations, as past experiences have shown the power of faith and community in supporting these missions.
WHEN IS THE DEADLINE?
We need to know whether or not you are committed by March 1. Our first informational call will take place on Sunday, February 11. Fill out this inquiry application before February 1 if you would like to be a part of the call.
HOW MANY PEOPLE CAN GO?
We have a limit of 12 people for the trip, and spots will be given on a first-come, first-served basis.
ARE CHILDREN ALLOWED?
Children under 18 are welcome to join the trip, but they must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. If you're interested, please email us for more details.
WHAT OTHER REQUIREMENTS ARE THERE?
To join the trip, all participants must have a valid passport and obtain a Sierra Leone visa, either by mailing an application to the embassy before travel or getting one on arrival for $80. There are no Covid-19 restrictions, but a travel portal registration is required, for which we'll provide links. A $60 security fee for airport travel is payable in advance ($30 each way). A Yellow Fever vaccination is mandatory*, and it's valid for life if previously received. Health clinics or your local travel clinic can provide the vaccination and advise on malaria prevention. Additionally, all team members must attend monthly planning meetings, either in person or via video call, and inquiry applications must be submitted by February 1.
*If a vaccine exemption waiver is obtained, it is possible to travel without the Yellow Fever vaccination.
OTHER QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Q: Is Sierra Leone safe?
A: Sierra Leone is a safe country and you will have our missionaries or trusted staff with you for any outreach events. From a medical perspective, malaria is common illness and it is recommended to take a prophylaxis, such as Malarone, starting two days before travel and continue a week after returning. We will also provide information on the symptoms and how to get treatment, if needed. It's also worth noting that Sierra Leone is a 5th poorest country in the world, thus you need to pay attention to your valuables at all times.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Sierra Leone is a tropical country with high humidity, so light clothing is recommended such as t-shirts, tank tops, shorts for men, Bermuda shorts or skirts and dresses for ladies. It is also recommended to cover the knees (shorts or dress) while in the villages, as a sign of respect to the culture. Sunscreen, a hat, and bug spray are also recommended.
Q: Do I need previous mission experience?
A: No, previous mission experience is not necessary. We will help you use your God-given gifts to serve and a willingness to learn is all that's required.
Q: How much money should I bring?
A: All meals, accommodations, and transportation are included in the cost. The only additional money you may want to bring is for souvenirs, extra drinks and food from the hotel, or for airport money. We suggest $200 or more.
Q: Can I bring gifts?
A: If you want to bring any gifts, please email our Country Director, Sarah Miller at sarah@hopeorphanhome.org to ensure it is appropriate and to get the number of gifts needed. There's no obligation to bring gifts though.
Q: How much luggage can I bring and what else should I pack?
A: You are entitled to two checked bags (50 pound limit) and a carry-on, and we recommend dedicating one bag to bringing items for the missionaries. We also have a way for your clothes to be washed, so you don't need to bring seven days of outfits.
Q: How will I communicate?
A: Our missionary speaks the language well and will translate between you and others.
We hope and pray this trip will be a wonderful time of growth, learning, and ultimately life-changing for you. While in country, we will have team meals, prayer time, reflection moments, and opportunities for our team members to share. We hope you will join us!
